Ice In Finally Declared, Happy New Year

Yes, it's been way too long since I have last posted. Holidays, the new year, the awful recent earthquake, and more. And a very late and weak Ice-In was declared on Lake Winnipesaukee. And of course, we have had many small adventures including two trips to Easton PA in support of one young man's efforts to move an electric airplane from Hartford, CT to Easton, with the intention of flying the aircraft over the Lafayette vs Lehigh football game on November 19, 2022.

Plus I have had some wonderful in-person and on-zoom poetry readings and some poems published..

And I updated my website, and migrated from using GoDaddy for editing to hosting with Google Domains and editing right here on blogger. I'm pretty happy with the result. Check it out and let me know what you think. https://carlapoet.com My readings are all listed on the Events tab and I have some virtual ones coming up next month in March.

Oh, and I made a 15 second kitchen hack video you might enjoy. Here's the link.

I'll start here with a photo of the elctric plane during its flyover at the Lafayette College home football game on Nov 19, 2022. I will also have some photos of our island after the major wind storm which has the island without power for more than 3 weeks.

Windstorm Christmas Weekend Bear Island

We took a chance and pedaled the kayak out from the marina to the maildock so that we could walk the northern section of Bear Island and assess some of the damage. The power was lost for over 3 weeks.  The first photo is of damage to the mailboxes on the mainland.

Frigid Weather in February

We had some frigid weather in February. Claude and I dress for the weather. Claude had a flat tire so chose to ride his bike home from the tire place in sub-zero F temperatures. I geared up for a walk the day before.

Trip from Hartford CT to Easton PA with Electric Airplane Entourage

Claude's nephew, a student at Lafayette College and a pilot had the idea he wanted to fly an electric plane over the Lafayette vs Lehigh Football home game on November 19, 2022. The plane has only a 20kwh battery and FAA rules require that you are not able to deplete the battery fully in flight, so that means the trip involved 6 legs and 7 airports, most of which were not equiped for charging the aircraft battery. Since most airports were not equipped to charge the plane, Claude's nephew recruited a bunch of owners of brand noew 300 plus mile range Ford F150 Lightning trucks to come along since the trucks have the abilty to act as portable electric sources both at 240 v and 120v. So, in these photos you can see (in reverse order) the start out in the morning in Harford (where the plane lives) and then some of the stops, some of the trucks and other EVs that came along for the trip, and at the end, the penultimate airport in the early evening, where we cooked popcorn on an induction hot plate off the ford f150 truck.

Flyover at the Fooball Game

The electric airplane has a high glide ration, which means it can behave like a glider under certain conditions, which allows it to conserve battery.

Here are some of the game day photos (in reverse order with respect to time).

Pre-Hartford Bike Excursion

We had to be at the Hartford airport at 4:00 am to start the next day, so the day before we did a little bicycle sight-seeing in CT.

Music

We went out to hear or take part in some live music events including "Wall of Grass," "Listen to This" an electirc Miles Davis tribute band, Mike Turk trio, and "John Barley Corn Must Live," a Traffic etc cover band. Some of the folks you see are Catharine David, Jamie Walker, Stu Kimball, Susan Cattaneo, Chris Pahud, Chris McDermott, Russ Gershon, Jerome Dupree, Chris Cote, Paul Ahlstrand, Todd Brunel, and others.

Nordic Skiing in Carlisle

Believe it or not I was able to ski in my yard for workouts for about 10 days in a row.

Mass Book Awards

I never tire of attending the Mass Book Awards in the Great central Hall of the state house. I love the modern clock sculpture. I usually go there by bike from the Park & Pedal parking lot on Soldier's Field Rd.

Friends

In Memory of Bob Sheil, a good friend

I just found out that my friend Bob Sheil (on the left in the photo) has passed away. He and our common friend John were the "keepers of the flowers" in the cove. Here is a link to an obituary for him if you are interested. https://www.sevendaysvt.com/vermont/obituary-robert-sheil-1948-2022/Content?oid=37182097
